Conference debates OTT as a support for new business models

In a world witnessing the constant advance if digital technologies, the explosion in the use of social networks, smartphones, the approaching advent of 5G and the internet of things, the change in behavior and habits of video consumption has a direct impact on audiovisual content distribution platforms.

This is the focus of the panel on “OTT as a Support for New Business Models”, which takes place next August 28 from 11 am to 12:20 pm within the schedule of the 2019 Set Expo Conference 2019. The largest technology, media and entertainment business event in Latin America and one of the world’s largest, SET EXPO will run from August 26 thru 29 at the Expo Center Norte Convention Center, in São Paulo.

The panel moderator will be Daniela Souza, founder of AD Digital and member of the Deliberative Council of SET. The speakers will be Roberto Araújo, CEO of Grupo Jovem Pan, Luis Mauricio Chopard Bonilauri, director of the Communications, Media and High Technology area of Accenture and Tiago Lessa, head of Marketing and Intelligence at Globoplay.

According to Daniela, we are experiencing a moment of transition that is causing a revolution throughout the entire industry that produces content. Within this context, irrespective of the content and who produces it, we need to position ourselves using new distribution models. “Content needs to be available, and companies need to offer a platform that affords the user a positive experience, with content that is relevant, and we believe that in this case the OTT platforms come into their own”, she says

Among other approaches, the panel will show how communication groups are preparing to take on challenges such as new user consumption habits and behavior on the one hand, and, on the other, the growing competition for retaining attention. Issues like how businesses present their strategies to the universe of content distribution on multiple platforms, how they understand their new business models and how they strive to balance advertising and subscriptions on their platforms are some of the provocative issues to be raised.

Such has been the evolution of OTTs that we are seeing movements among some of the majors and tech companies such as Disney, HBO, Apple and, of course, Netflix. In the case of Netflix, it initially drew on the licensing model, later experiencing regulations from other market players, most recently Disney, which decided to create its own streaming platform, no longer licensing its content to Netflix. This has increasingly spurred Netflix to produce its own content, sparking a chain reaction in the sector, which has spilled over into in Brazil. “Some companies will find their own paths, since they have enough experience and are mature enough to do, while others will come to understand that they need to partner with a technology company so that their business model makes more sense”, she says.

This will be the 31st Technology, Media and Entertainment Business Conference staged by SET. The entity expects to attract 2,000 attendees, who will watch over 50 panels and 200 talks over the four days of the event.

The program schedule includes topics on radio and audio; AV contribution and infrastructure; innovation and disruptive technologies; content production; audiovisual distribution and regulatory and standardization issues.
