Digital Terrestrial TV. Where are we going?

Digital Terrestrial TV. Where are we going?

The Japanese TV industry has a longstanding concern with image quality. It began in the 1970s, with the first HD TV research, going through the first broadcasts in HD in the late 1980s, still in the analog system, to the predicted to transmit 8K for much of the country's population as early as 2025. The first phase of this challenge is to reconcile the current digital broadcasting system with the 4k format. Let us present what Japanese commercial broadcasters are doing in this regard.

Chair: Fernando Bittencourt – International Director – SET

International Director – SET/ Consultant at FB Consultants Former General Manager for Engineering at TV Globo. Graduated in Electronic Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Beginning in 1994, he was Coordinator of the SET/ABERT group created by the ABERT and SET to study and plan the implementation of Digital TV in Brazil. He was a full member of the Council for Social Communication in the Brazilian Senate, as an engineer with renowned knowledge in the field of social communication. Participates in the Deliberative Council of the Forum on the Brazilian Digital TV System. He is also a member of the IEEE, IBC and the SMPTE.

An overview of R&D’s on the next-generation DTTB in Japan

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan formulated a roadmap for 4K/8K in July 2015. Based on the roadmap, the ministry promotes research and development of 4K/8K terrestrial broadcasting technologies. An overview will be provided on the Japanese R&D activities involving terrestrial 4K/8K technologies under development and technical specifications of experimental stations for transmitting 4K/8K DTTB. The presentations will also pose issues with migration to a next-generation DTTB services.

Speaker: Hiroaki Kimura - Director for Digital Broadcasting Technology, Broadcasting Technology Division, Information and Communications Bureau - MIC Japan

Mr. Hiroaki Kimura is responsible for international cooperation on ISDB-T and advanced broadcasting technologies in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan. He conducted surveys on DTV possession during a DTTB transition in Japan and formulated technical regulations on small area digital terrestrial TV broadcasting and disaster resilience installations of broadcasting stations. Recently, he was also responsible for negotiations on WRC-19 issues at preparatory meetings of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity.

Hybrid system of 4K and current HD DTTB - 3hierarchical layers+4K MIMO

We studied technical methodology to divide a segment and transmit 2K as horizontal polarized wave and 4K as both horizontal and vertical polarized waves. 2K / 4K shared modulator and 4K demodulator were prototyped, We demonstrated that 2K was received by a conventional receiver, and 4K was receive by a prototype demodulator by a wired coupling experiment .

Speaker: Iwao Namikawa - Professional Department Manager - Broadcasting Technology Department - Kansai Television - Japan

Joined Kansai Television CO.LTD. (KTV) in 1980. Go to BS Fuji INC. in 2001~2005. Manager, Media Division, CROSS MEDIA Business Dep. KTV in 2006. Manager, Technology Promotion Dep. in 2012. Manager, Broadcasting Technology Dep. in 2014. Professional Department Manager Broadcasting Technology Dep. in 2017. I am currentry working on study of advanced terrestrial broadcasting and received ITE Technology Promotion Award in 2002.

R & D for simultaneously deploying 4K-UHD broadcasting in comprising to 2K-TV

The LDM (Layered Division Multiplexing) method, which is the basic technology of this proposal, is a method of hierarchically multiplexing a plurality of signals with power difference. In this presentation, we confirm the operation principle of LDM using trial production with LDM method applied to FPU device and report on the service area of 4K broadcasting when we place it in low power hierarchy with minimum influence on terrestrial digital broadcasting.

Speaker: Kazuki Imamura - TBS TV - Tokyo Broadcasting System Television

Apr 2010–Mar 2014, Waseda University, Japan Bachelor of Engineering. Apr 2014–Mar 2016, Waseda University, Japan Master of Engineering. Apr 2016- Present. Be engaged in network operations division of TV technology.

LDM Modulation and Demodulation method keeping with compatibility of ISDB-T

We propose the LDM method as the next generation of digital television transmission. With the LDM method, the migration from the current 2K to the next generation 4K can be performed without problems. This presentation will explain the modulation / demodulation technology of the LDM system compatible with the current ISDB-T.

ISDB-TB Hybrid Transmission using ATSC 3.0 LDM and BICM

Current terrestrial digital TV systems are disruptive and require a new channel for operation. With the advent of Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) it is possible to perform multi-layered transmission with different systems at the same time and at the same frequency just by adjusting the power level in each layer. This presentation will show a modification of the ISDB-TB system named LDM ISDB-TB in which the ISDB-TB system is transmitted in the main layer and the Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) stage of ATSC 3.0 is transmitted in the enhanced layer. Computational simulations and laboratory tests show that it is possible to perform the ISDB-TB hybrid transmission and reception with the ATSC 3.0 BICM. This solution is an alternative way to introduce a new digital terrestrial TV broadcasting system while maintaining compatibility with the installed receiver park and using the same channel and transmission infrastructure.

Consumer Habits and Future of Media

Consumer Habits and Future of Media

This panel will raise questions about the influence of new technologies in the media and entertainment consumption habits.

Does it make sense to continue discussing traditional vs. digital?
Does the behavior of the young people point to a generational phenomenon, as it was spoken, or just of age?
Traditional and digital are mutually exclusive or complementary?
Which models are perpetuating themselves and which have been appearing or disappearing?
What are the trends for Open TV, Cable / Sat and OTT?
How do the new generations of open TV change this panorama?
