Multicast ABR: The Key to Delivering OTT, Maintaining Traditional Satellite Quality and Unlocking New Revenue

Abstract:
Video consumption on second screens, such as smartphones, tablets, and PCs is increasing dramatically. To stay competitive, it’s imperative that satellite operators find an affordable way to deliver high-quality OTT services. Many OTT solutions for satellite are limited to live applications, they’re expensive, and they don’t resolve the quality issues inherent to OTT distribution.
This presentation explains how operators can utilize OTT as an alternative to traditional transport stream broadcast to address QoE issues, including latency, buffering, bitrate and video quality limitations. The solution involves converting unicast streams into multicast so that content can be delivered over the satellite to a local satellite-to-OTT gateway.
Through the power of multicast ABR, satellite operators can deliver all types of OTT services, including live VOD, catch-up, and start-over TV, to connected devices. The session will discuss tips for transitioning to a full OTT distribution workflow and delivering the same video quality as broadcast, with zero latency or buffering. Several different use cases will be explored, including pay-TV and enterprise applications. Moreover, the presentation will examine how deploying a circular buffer within the receiver, operators can further expand their offering to include advanced services such as trick play and start-over TV for increased monetization.
